Approach to Literacy

Reading opens doors to many opportunities. At the WES Elementary School Library, we foster a love of reading by helping each child find books that speak to their interests. Student choice is essential—every book is available for exploration, including those children may not yet read independently, encouraging them to discover books they can truly enjoy and learn from.

But, our library is more than books. We guide students in research using trusted online tools, teach internet safety, and offer Makerspace projects that inspire hands-on creativity and problem-solving.

Library Curriculum

The K-4 library curriculum is based on the following AASL (American Association of School Libraries) common beliefs and standards framework:

  • Learners are at the center of the learning process.

  • Learning is a social responsibility requiring collaboration.

  • Libraries provide equitable access to information and resources.

  • Literacy includes critical thinking, creativity, and digital skills.

  • Inquiry and curiosity drive meaningful learning experiences.

  • Ethical use of information is essential.

  • Continuous reflection and growth improve learning and teaching.

Maine Chickadee Book Awards

The Chickadee Award: A Maine Children’s Choice Picture Book Project is a picture book award program for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. This award is in its twenty-first year, and is given annually to one of ten picture books nominated by a committee of teachers, librarians, and early literacy professionals, with the winner chosen by Maine school children. The purpose of this award is to encourage children to develop an appreciation for excellence in writing and illustration that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The evaluation process leading up to voting will help children understand and interpret books and help them to express and support their judgment about text and pictures with convincing evidence. It is hoped that this Maine Children’s Choice Picture Book Project will be incorporated into the curriculum and supported by both school and public libraries. The Maine Association of School Libraries is providing financial support for this project.
